Top 10 Must See / Must Do in New Zealand Wellington

No Comments | posted in Activity,LOTR,Wellington by DoRiS at 4:57 am

Cook StraitAs you already know, Wellington is New Zealand capital. It is located in the south of North Island, somewhere in the middle of both the islands.

Wellington is the fourth biggest city by size and third most populated city in New Zealand. Like Auckland, there are many things to see and do here too!

Top 10 Must See / Must Do in New Zealand Wellington

10) Te Papa Museum of New Zealand – THE museum of New Zealand. Even if you are not a museum lover, this is the one museum you must visit if you are in New Zealand. Everything you need to know about the country can be found here.

9) Try Cat’s Pee wine. Not sure if it is really from cat’s pee, but I never tried it. Friends who tried said that it was okay. I don’t even drink my pee; do I really want to drink cats’ pee?

Lords of the Rings Tour to Deer Park Heights at Queenstown

8 Comments | posted in LOTR by DoRiS at 8:56 am

Deer and DorisMy most recent Lord of the Rings guided tour was to Deer Park Heights in February 2009. As the name suggests, it is 800m above Queenstown and there are heaps of deer around.

In mid-2009, the owner decided to close off this 800-hectare Deer Park for public access. It is a pity though as the scenery up there is fantastic! It was here where I had my closest encounter with a deer. Let me share with you my experiences.

Lord of the Rings Tour to Deer Park Heights

The entrance to Deer Park Heights is from Kelvin Heights Peninsula Road.  As you drive along, you get to see many types of animals roaming around freely. It is kind of like a safari-style park.

The animals include Bison, Donkeys, Goats, Highland Cattle, Himalayan Thar, Llama, Miniature Horses and Sheep. There is also a nut dispenser and nut tins here for you to feed the animals.

Most people probably did not know this. There is a Korean Prison movie set made for a Walt Disney Film “The Rescue” in 1986 here! From one side, it looks like Middle Earth, and from another, it looks like you are in olden days Korea.

Wellington Rover Tour – My Favourite Lord of the Rings Tour in New Zealand

No Comments | posted in LOTR by DoRiS at 11:03 am

Lord of the Rings beerBeen to several Lord of the Rings tours in New Zealand, and this is my favourite. Not sure if it is because this is the place with Rivendell, or perhaps I had a knowledgeable and interesting guide.

Went for this tour in September 2006. According to my friend who went in March 2008, there were some changes. Just checked the website, there are even more additions to it now!

Itinerary

The first stop was to Mount Victoria. From the top, it provides a 360-degree view of Wellington city, harbour, and ocean. Mount Victoria is part of the Wellington town belt, land set-aside in 1841 as public recreation ground.

On the slopes of the mountain, is a film site for Lord of the Rings.  Here is where terrified hobbits hid from Black Riders in dense forest undergrowth. The guide even got us to re-enact the scene!

Then we proceed to Wellington Town Belt, walking through the outer shire. This location also includes scenes of ‘get off the road’ and ‘shortcut to mushrooms’. This is such a ‘nature’ place and it is surprisingly close to Wellington city.

18 Lord of the Rings (LOTR) Film Sites on New Zealand North Island (Part 3)

Rivendell at Kaitoke Regional Park in WellingtonPutangirua Pinnacles – Dimholt Road

The special feature of Putangirua Pinnacles is the ‘badlands erosion’. It is a spectacular landscape formed over time as streambed exposed layers of gravel to rain and floods. The rocks that are more resistant formed the pinnacles.

Check out the viewing platform near the base of the pinnacles. The top bush walk track to the viewing platform above the Pinnacles formations has already been closed for safety reasons.

Kaitoke Regional Park – Rivendell

Among all the film sites in North Island, this is my favourite. Perhaps I really like the fantasy Rivendell. Somehow, Kaitoke Regional Park has the ethereal look, not sure if it is because this place was used as Rivendell.

The park is located at the foothills of Tararua Ranges, with many mature native trees such as beech, rata, and rimu. Best thing about this place, the “magical tranquillity” remained almost the same for centuries.

Otaki Gorge from Lord of the RingsWaitarere Forest – Trollshaw Forest and Osgiliath Wood

The Waitarere Forest is at the south of Foxton on the Kapiti Coast. This is one of the lesser-known forest track and not so common for tourists. If you want to go in, do bring sufficient food, water and a GPS along.

Kapiti Coast, on the other hand, is a popular holiday site for many Kiwis. It is about an hour from Wellington city, and you can get spectacular sea views, glorious sunsets, with an untouched native forest and dramatic landscapes.

Otaki and Otaki Gorge – Leaving the Shire

I had the impression I went somewhere in Otaki once for a camp. It was an outdoorsy camp and they recommended not to bring valuables. There is no reception for any mobile phone either.

There are several tracks that go from Otaki Gorge Road down to the gorge.  However, the actual locations used to show the Hobbits leaving the Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring are not accessible by public.
