Jan 5 – Sunset

No Comments | posted in Activity,Food,Life by DoRiS at 3:52 pm

SunsetWent for dinner at Salt Grill and Sky Bar at Ion Orchard today. Thanks to the fantastic weather, we get to see a gorgeous sunset right in front of us at level 55 of Singapore. Got the best window seat, with the setting sun right in front! The food was yummy and cost SGD 156 for 2 main courses and 2 desserts. There is a minimum spending of SGD 60 per pax.

Watching the sunset while having dinner is THE experience. Probably coz I don’t do it that regularly on high grounds. It signifies the end of a great day to a simple night, and the start of a even greater day in 12 hours time. Personally, I like sunrise better coz it is better to start than end. But I have yet to see one without falling asleep while waiting.

Since it was our first time there, we took a 360 degrees walk and saw the entire night view. We were lucky to get a complimentary walk and checked out their high-tech viewing scope (somewhat like telescope but computerised). It shows the view in day, night and live. That was super awesome! Great experience!

Top 10 Must See / Must Do in New Zealand Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay

Art Deco building at NapierGisborne and Hawke’s Bay are both the eastern side of New Zealand North Island. Hence, decided to combine them in a ‘top 10’ list.

Gisborne is commonly known to be the first city to see the sunrise daily. Well, there are other pacific islands that see the sunrise earlier, and it is also dependent on the earth tilt.

Anyone who heard of Hawke’s Bay would have heard of the wine. Even here in Singapore, I have seen Hawke’s Bay wine in our supermarkets. Obviously, it is way more expensive here than in New Zealand.

Yummy Breakfast in New Zealand

11 Comments | posted in Food by DoRiS at 8:01 am

My Saturday breakfastOn a random no-plan weekend, I decided to cook my own meals, just like the good old days in the little town known as Palmerston North. My Saturday breakfast consists of basil and black pepper salmon, egg with spring onion, sautéed mushrooms, and fresh raw vegetables.

Before I went to New Zealand, I don’t have the habit of eating breakfast. But after 3 years in New Zealand, now my favourite meal of the day is breakfast! After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper. ~ Adelle Davis (1904 – 1974)

Most cafes around New Zealand serve quality hot breakfast – ‘big’ breakfast that includes everything (from eggs to mushrooms to bacons to toasts), Egg Benedict (with smoked salmon) and pancakes (with bacon). I love all of them, to the extent that sometimes I eat the ‘breakfast’ meal for dinner.

One of the best things about New Zealand breakfast menu is that many cafes serve all-day breakfast! To someone who did not grow up there, I thought this was like super cool!

Where to get Halal food in New Zealand?

10 Comments | posted in Food by DoRiS at 10:44 am

Nando's at Wellington Courtenay PlaceThere are few restaurants in New Zealand that serves Halal food, and equally few places that sell raw Halal food. In bigger cities, such as Auckland and Wellington, there are quite a number of Halal Malaysia Restaurants, Indian Restaurants and Kebab stands. In smaller towns, it is unlikely that there will be such shops and restaurants.

In the cities, there are specialised shops that sell Halal foodstuff, Asian cuisine, etc. I have been to a number of Asian supermarkets around, and some of them do sell things like Sambal chilli and Halal Indomie Mee Goreng. In fact, the local supermarket chains also carry various Halal certified foodstuff, especially if there is a significant number of Muslims in the area.

8 Kiwiana Desserts You Might Want To Try in New Zealand

PavlovaPavlova

It looks like a cake and meringue, with a crispy biscuit-like crust and soft cream inside. Definitely worth a try considering it is a national dessert for New Zealand. Usually served with kiwifruit slices and strawberries (sometimes with other fruits such as peaches and raspberries). The pavlova at most restaurants are pretty good and just the right size without overdose on sugar or cream.

Hokey Pokey Ice Cream

This is one of the most popular ice cream flavour in New Zealand. It is plain vanilla ice cream with small pieces of sponge toffee. It was an interesting flavour the first time I tried it but I guess it didn’t really grow on me. You can add a scope of Hokey Pokey if you are buying a cone at any ice cream parlour. This is like one of the most important thing to do during hot summer days!
