Windy Wellington – New Zealand Capital

Absolutely Positively WellingtonOne thing you gotta know about Wellington, it is windy. Seriously, your hair gonna get messy and you might get wind chill. The buildings do block some wind, but still, it can get quite chilly.

When J. R. R. Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings during the 1940s, the setting was in England. Thankfully, Peter Jackson found the environment similarity in New Zealand this century – hence, we got the Lord of the Rings trilogy!

The Lord of the Rings movies brought out the best of New Zealand’s nature. Ask anyone and most will associate New Zealand with Lord of the Rings and vice versa.

Do you know that Peter Jackson is from Wellington? He resides in Pukerua Bay, a coastal town near Wellington. Which meant that – many of the scenes from Lord of the Rings are actually found in Wellington! Yes, his studio is there too.

You will know if you are near Rotorua by the smell! The pungent smell of sulphur, or more affectionately termed – rotten eggs. I have never attempted to smell rotten eggs to prove this saying.

Okay, unless you really absolutely hate unusual smells (or sensitive nose), most people will get used to the ‘fragrance’ after an hour or so. Personally, I have never seen anyone wearing a mask there due of the smell.

Today, I will share with you 5 of Rotorua Attractions – Gondola, Luge, Quad-bike, Shweeb and Zorb!

State Highway Highlights – You Might Wanna Stop to Take a Look Here! (Part 2)

Fitzgerald Glade between Rotorua and TirauState Highway 5 – Fitzgerald Glade

As you drive between Tirau to Rotorua, you will pass through this section known as the Fitzgerald Glade. This area on the western side of Mamau Plateau is a well-known native forest remnant.

Keep a lookout for the Fitzergald Glade sign, even though you may or may not miss this stretch. It is rare in New Zealand where the native bush grows right up to the roadside, and the trees forming a canopy overhead like a green tunnel.

Stop by at the café, or perhaps enjoy the view for a moment. At this scenic reserve, you can try spotting some New Zealand native trees such as Tawa, Mangeao, Rewarewa, Pukatea and Nikau.

State Highway Highlights – You Might Wanna Stop to Take a Look Here! (Part 1)

Rangipo DesertThere are so many things to see everywhere all around New Zealand. And there is just so little time to see everything. This is a list to tell you the main interesting highlights along the 8 National Highways.

It is not possible to cover all the major attractions along all the highways, as some of them are relatively short with not much scenic views unless you consider paddock, cow and sheep as scenery.

State Highway 1 – Desert Road

The Rangipo Desert is not an actual desert, but it looks like one. The vegetation is minimal and in shades of yellow and brown. The lack of greenery is due to the harsh alpine conditions, poor soil quality and drying winds.

A large portion of Rangipo Desert is 1,000 metres above sea level, with ground frosts for about 270 days annually, and heavy snowfalls. Hence, Desert Road is frequently closed off during winter.

Along this road, you get a fantastic view of the 3 volcano peaks – Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.  Do you know that the Black Gate of Mordor scenes were shot in this Rangipo Desert in year 2000?

12 Memorable Points Along New Zealand North Island State Highway 1 (SH1) (Part 2)

Police Station at Bulls (Const-A-Bull)Bulls

Bulls has many eat-a-bull places – from McValue-a-bull (McDonalds) to submerge-a-bull (Subway), you will be as full as a bull (Jabies Doner Kebabs) when you are done. It is definitely an enjoy-a-bull and unforget-a-bull place.

Lindale

Lindale is an excellent rest point before you drive into Wellington city. This is the first place I found an ice cream flavour with the name Doris (Kapiti Black Doris Plum & Crème Fraiche) and Cat’s Pee on a Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc.

Wellington Te Papa Museum

It is not located beside State Highway 1. Just make a left turn at Taranaki Street in Wellington and you will see Te Papa Museum at the end of the road. This place is world famous! Don’t leave Wellington without going in there.
