Travel Insurance – To get or not to get?

No Comments | posted in Drive,Facts,Travel by DoRiS at 2:53 pm

Nissan MarchPersonally, I always travel with personal insurance. Things happen. This is the money I pay andrather never to use it. It is not a value-for-money purchase but more of prevention-is-better-than-cure policy.

I am not a financial guru, but am considered financially savvy among my peers. I have insurance for life, health and liability. Especially since unpredictable things can happen when travelling, you never know when you need it.

On top of the usual student insurance in New Zealand, I bought extra travel insurance duringthe 3 summers I was travelling, as well as for my 2 South Island holidays and 1 Australia holiday. Thankfully, I never use the insurance at all during my 3 holidays.

Jan 2 – Expressway / State Highway

ExpresswayExpressway or State Highway are there for functional reason – to speed up travel time. Having spent most of my life in cities, this is actually a common travel scene. Personally, I find the view of green + grey cityscape quite therapeutic. The vehicles zooming by like thoughts buzzing in our left and right brain.

Singapore currently has 9 expressways, with 1 upcoming under construction and another planning in progress. Guess there are way too many cars these days, the travelling time via expressways has been increasing over the years. It was faster travelling the same distance 10 years ago with lesser traffic.

New Zealand has State Highway numbering from 1 to 99, but some numbers are missing, while some have extension A and B. State Highway 1 is the main expressway running from Cape Reinga to Wellington Airport, and then Picton Ferry Terminal to Stirling Point.

Me getting blown at Te Apiti Wind FarmTaranaki, Manawatu and Wanganui are located in central western region of New Zealand North Island. There is not much touristy stuff to do here, as most of the residents are locals.

Having said that, there are also things you can see or do here that are not available anywhere else. After spending 3 school years in Manawatu Palmerston North, I have accumulated many fond memories in this region.

Top 10 Must See / Must Do in New Zealand Manawatu, Taranaki and Wanganui:

10) The most unforget-a-bull town is Bulls. The town claims that it is live-a-bull and the towns folks are hospit-a-bull. In case you are wondering, it is named after James Bulls even though their main mascot is a four-legged bull.

Top 10 Must See / Must Do in New Zealand Northland

Ninety Mile BeachAs the name suggests, this area is the far north of New Zealand. The biggest city here is Whangarei (pronounced as Fa-nga-rei). It is nice and warm, pretty much sub-tropical, even during middle of winter.

My recommendations for Top 10 Must See / Must Do in Northland:

10) See New Zealand’s oldest tree, Te Matua Ngahere, a Kauri (Agathis australis) in Waipoua Forest. Personally, I drove past the area, but didn’t go into Waipoua Forest. Hope you get to see it!

9) While you are there, also look out for New Zealand’s largest tree, Tane Mahuta, a Kauri (Agathis australis). It is taller and probably 1,000 years younger than Te Matua Ngahere.

My Favourite Fun and Free Activities in New Zealand North Island

Restaurant in Bulls Town - Full-as-a-bullOne of my most important travel philosophies is that the activity must be fun for me. Sounds simple? My choice of activities is what is fun in my opinion, not really what is termed ‘fun’ for everyone else.

Remember when we were students, we can find many fun and free activities to do? Like hanging out at playground, going to the beach, exploring new vicinities. That’s what I did in New Zealand during my university days.

Once we start earning money, we are more ready to spend some cash on better enjoyment. However, sometimes the simplicity of the activity is what makes it priceless – your unique experience.

I spent 3 years in New Zealand North Island, and did many activities that and fun and free. Let me share my 10 favourites with you. In fact, I am quite sure you will enjoy most of them too!
