Jan 6 – City Skyline

No Comments | posted in Activity,Auckland,Life by DoRiS at 6:13 pm

SkylineMany countries around the world have beautiful city skylines – from various angles and taken at different building. Was at a bar on Level 71 today and took this photo of Singapore skyline before sunset. Loves being on high buildings/grounds and view the city skyline, makes the area looks vast and endless.

There are heaps of high rise buildings, probably not in skyscraper standard, around Singapore. One new thing that I am starting to try this year is to go around the top of various buildings to see Singapore skyline in a new angle – bird eye view. With the cars appearing like dots, it just tells us how small and insignificant we are compared to mother earth.

Of course, dining at these semi-fine dining restaurants and sky bars are pricey. Can’t do it too often at this point of my life. Definitely a good option for special occasions. There are just so many of such restaurants and bars around which boast to show excellent Singapore skyline. It is definitely an experience to visit at least once in a lifetime.

Favourite view of Rangitoto Island from Mission BayThere might be 101 things to do and see in Auckland any day, and probably even any time. It is a big city with heaps of attractions to offer – nature, shopping, dining, etc. You name it, and very likely, you can do it there.

After spending about 6 months in Auckland, I have done both touristy and local stuff. Let me provide you with my list of recommendations. Many people might not agree with some of the points listed, but these are my recommendations.

Adventure @ Auckland Sky Tower

4 Comments | posted in Auckland by DoRiS at 5:46 am

In New Zealand where sports and adventure are famous all over the island, you will expect something of that sort in cosmopolitan Auckland. Well, before proceeding to bungee jumping and skydiving at other parts, you can try the SkyWalk and SkyJump right in the middle of Auckland city – the Sky Tower.

Auckland Sky Tower SkyWalk

SkyWalk is known as one of New Zealand’s most thrilling attraction and considered Auckland’s ‘must-try’. You will be walking on a 1.2metre wide walkway around the Sky Tower at 192 metres above the ground with no handrails.

Check out Olive Henry, who goes for a SkyWalk for her 80th birthday!

Find out more at www.skywalk.co.nz.

My Wonderful Experience @ Auckland Sky Tower

11 Comments | posted in Auckland by DoRiS at 5:48 am

Night view at Auckland Sky TowerAuckland Sky Tower is 328m and the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand. Went to Auckland Sky Tower twice in my life, and the experience is slightly different both times.

Someone taught me the best time to enjoy such views are 1 hour before sunset. By doing so, you get to see the day view, watch the sunset and see the night view; all at 1 go at 1 ticket price!

First trip to Auckland Sky Tower

Went there for the first time with my Canadian colleague, Janice. It was an impromptu decision to visit the Sky Tower. We went in about 1 hour before sunset and camwhore all over the tower.

We started taking photos of our hands and legs and were giggling like mad. Even other visitors were having a good laugh at us for providing the entertainment.

When we were on the Sky Tower, we made another impromptu decision – have our dinner at the Orbit Restaurant. We had to go on the waiting list for a while, as you need to make reservation for this restaurant.

While waiting, we called another friend, Andy, to tell him that we are going to have candlelight dinner. Lucky us, someone cancelled their reservation and we got a space! And by the way, there was a candle during our dinner.

Auckland Botanic Gardens at Manurewa, South Auckland

19 Comments | posted in Auckland by DoRiS at 9:52 am

Rose Garden at Auckland Botanic GardensBefore I worked in Auckland Botanic Gardens in November 2008, I took it for granted that botanical gardens are pretty gardens for people to enjoy. After 9 weeks there, I saw how much work the team put in to beautify the gardens, and the maintenance behind it, I appreciate the back end work a lot more today.

Auckland Botanic Gardens is located right next to the Southern Motorway (SH1) on Hill Road at Manurewa. To get there, travel south from Auckland downtown and exit at the Manurewa/Hill Road after Manukau City. Turn left onto Hill Road and the main entrance is the first driveway on the left.

Auckland Botanic Gardens is opened from 8am to 8pm during daylight saving hours (summer) and 8am to 6pm during non-daylight saving hours (winter). It is free entry for all and only closed on Christmas Day.
